What’s in Store: D J Bryant with special guest Tom Hansen

Join us on Saturday, September 9 at Fantagraphics Bookstore for an evening of contemporary comix and prose with D. J. Bryant and Tom Hansen. Bryant presents an exhibition of original drawings from his debut graphic novel, Unreal City. Hansen will read from his latest novel, This Is What We Do.

J. Bryant’s sensuous Unreal City contains five highly charged stories about relationships. They address gender, narcissism, objectification, and the thin line that divides love from hate. Existential and elliptical, these narratives perfectly complement Bryant’s exquisite artwork, which will be on full display in the exhibition. His rendering style recalls modern masters like Charles Burns and Jaime Hernandez. Unreal indeed.

Tom Hansen’s atmospheric novel, This Is What We Do, similarly explores themes of alienation, lust, beauty, and brutality. As Booklist observes, “There’s no moral element to it, no right, no wrong; they just do. Hansen, author of the acclaimed memoir American Junkie (2010), has created a modern noir in which the protagonists are defined by Sartre and Camus as well as Bonnie and Clyde. It’s a compelling, existential thrill ride.”

Don’t miss this opportunity to meet these exceptional local artists on Saturday, September 9 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, with Hansen reading at 7:00 PM. This event coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic neighborhood.
